Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies: Education and Training

Now that you\'ve done your homework on potential credit counseling agencies and asked your creditor those important questions, it’s time to delve even deeper into your research by reading up on the different training and certifications credit counselors can receive. Your counselor will be helping you personally with your debt and finances, so it\'s important to be thorough before choosing.

Certifications of Credit Counseling Agencies

There are two types of certification in the credit-counseling industry. Any organization you choose should be certified by one or the other.

  • The Council on Accreditation (COA) is an international, independent, not-for-profit, child- and family-service and behavioral healthcare accrediting organization. The COA promotes standards, quality services for families and the value of accreditation.

  • ISO (International Organization for Standardization) certification is a new requirement of some agencies by the creditors. Industry standards now require agencies to meet strict guidelines and perform an annual audit to maintain their ISO certificate. Ask the agency if they are ISO certified.

The agency should be accredited through an independent, third-party association such as the Council on Accreditation.

Individual Counselor Training

Although there is no national certification program or agency for consumer credit counselors, reputable consumer credit counseling agencies provide adequate training for their counselors. Members of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling and the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies are all accredited agencies with certified counselors, so your agency should either be members of these foundations or be equally certified.

The Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education provides approved certification. AFCPE is a certification association for professionals who provide credit, financial and housing counseling. The ACC program, which operates under the AFCPE umbrella, covers counseling skills and techniques, credit use, budgeting, personal financial statements, credit laws, overcoming over indebtedness, bankruptcy and consumer issues.

If you can, look for a counselor at your agency that has his or her bachelor\'s degree, because that\'s something that is typically not a required in order to be a certified credit counselor. This might give your counselor a little edge when it comes to crafting a plan for you and your finances.

A counselor who might have experience in social work or psychology should also come in handy in regards to helping others. He or she could understand the mental duress being in debt can cause you and therefore be more sympathetic to the situation.

Whatever education and certification your counselor has - and you should always ask what certification they have - it is more important for you to feel comfortable in his or her hands.
